10 Honest SEO Tips for Small Businesses

Search field and rising organic growth chart in MakerWeb brand colours

Every so often a business owner shows us an email promising to get them "#1 on Google in 30 days." Our advice is always the same: delete it. Nobody can promise that — not us, not anyone. Rankings depend on things no agency controls.

What you can control is doing the basics properly and not stopping after two weeks. That's genuinely most of the game. Here are ten of those basics, in plain English.

If you are unsure where the site is failing before you start, use this ten-point SEO audit for hidden website problems to check indexing, canonical URLs, internal links and mobile performance in a sensible order.

1. Write down what your customers actually type

Not what you call your work — what they search. A customer doesn't google "bespoke digital solutions." They google "web designer near me" or "why is my website so slow." Sit with that difference for a minute; it changes every page you write. Google's own autocomplete and the "People also ask" boxes are a free goldmine here.

2. One page, one job

A page trying to rank for everything ranks for nothing. If you offer five services, that's five pages — each answering one question completely — not one page listing all five.

3. Treat your title tag like a tiny advert

The blue clickable line in search results is often the only thing a stranger sees before deciding whether you exist. Lead with the benefit, keep it under about 60 characters, and never let two pages share the same one.

4. Sound like a human who's done the work

Google leans on what it calls E-E-A-T — experience, expertise, authority, trust. In practice that means real author names, honest writing, a findable address, and genuine reviews. Never buy or invent reviews; it's against the rules and, frankly, customers can smell it.

5. Speed is an SEO tip, not just a tech one

A slow page loses visitors and rankings. It's the rare fix that pays off twice, so it's worth doing before almost anything clever.

6. Get your headings in order

One <h1> per page, then ## and below in sequence — no skipping. Boring, invisible, and it quietly helps both readers and crawlers follow along.

When you mention a service, link to it. Internal links spread authority around your site and help Google find pages it might otherwise miss.

8. Don't skip the plumbing

A sitemap, HTTPS, sensible canonical URLs. None of it is glamorous. Skipping it just quietly caps how well everything else can do.

9. Answer real questions

One article that genuinely answers what a customer asked beats ten thin ones written for a robot. Write the thing you find yourself explaining to clients over and over.

10. Count leads, not applause

A keyword can rank beautifully and bring you nothing. Track calls, enquiries and sales — the numbers that pay wages — not likes and impressions.

None of this is a magic trick. It compounds: the work you do this month keeps paying off months from now. Do the basics, keep going, and be suspicious of anyone selling overnight miracles.
